Learn Where To Buy Discount Furniture.

Buying Furniture at Discounts

New furniture is expensive. If you have ever went shopping looking for a new piece for your living room you were probably surprised at the prices. But you don't have to spend your life savings for good quality furniture. With a little shopping around at alternative sources you can find good furniture within your budget.

Outlet Shops

Furniture outlet stores sell furniture at prices well below standard retail because the furniture either has been slightly damaged, returned by a customer, or simply did not meet the factory specifications. One thing to keep in mind is that this furniture often cannot be returned and does not have a warranty. Therefore it is important to look over the furniture carefully before you buy it.

Furniture Auctions

Estate auctions are another source for finding discount furniture. In fact you can find high quality pieces that would cost thousands of dollars retail for only hundreds. It can take some time to find what you are looking for so be prepared to his attend multiple auctions waiting for just the right piece.

Did you know that you can also find good deals on furniture through online auctions? The only downside to buying through online auctions is that you are making a purchase based on a description and a photograph. Therefore it is important to read the description carefully and ask any questions you have of the seller.

Damaged Furniture

Nearly every furniture store has a section where they sell furniture that has been damaged at discounted prices. This furniture has either been damaged while sitting in the showroom or it has been returned by customer. Nevertheless you'll find some good deals. It's important to note that all of these items are usually negotiable. Therefore don't pay more than you're comfortable with.

Naked Furniture

Naked furniture refers to furniture that doesn't have a finish on it. All it needs is a little paint or varnish and it will be perfect. The best thing is you get to choose the design and then add the finish later. This way you can find the perfect match for your home.

It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to find great furniture to complete that new room. Shop around and do some research and you'll find good furniture at cheap prices.

Webmaster & Freelancer - Outsourcing Benefits

Increasing numbers of webmasters view outsourcing as their advantage in the business "game, and, it must be considered as organizations develop competitive strategies. The benefits of outsourcing to freelancers are real and significant. As webmasters around the world realize, outsourcing has become an essential change mechanism for their business success. In addition, its critical that companies choose the right outsourcing freelance provider to deliver the advantages they seek.

BENEFITS

* Outsourcing overwhelmingly delivers promised benefits. Studies have shown that webmasters get real value from outsourcing to freelancers. Almost three quarters of those able to measure the value of their outsourcing said they met or exceeded their expectations.

* Most companies plan to outsource business processes and functions in the future. In fact, 2/3's of respondents to a recent study stated they want to outsource anything from a select, specific project to everything that's not proprietary.

* Outsourcing cuts costs, in addition it fuels growth and innovation. The ultimate goal of outsourcing is evolving as organizations acknowledge it offers powerful tools to transform their business strategies. Certainly, webmasters want to reduce costs. In addition, they also recognize the greater business benefits of outsourcing such as integrating new ideas and infusing innovative collaboration.

* Contrary to previous thinking, outsourcing doesn't relinquish project control. Effective outsourcing requires good governance. Webmasters that enjoy the greatest results from outsourcing apply the same management practices to their outsourcing arrangements as they do to everything else they manage. The most important practice is adequate source management, requiring a collaborative relationship with the freelance provider.

* Webmasters require flexible outsourcing solutions not, necessarily, the lowest bid freelancers. Webmasters want options and survey responses indicate that the popular outsourcing destinations are not, predominantly, to freelancers working in countries with economies that support the lowest bids. The quality of the freelance experience and skills ultimately outweighs the costs.

Outsourcing enables organizations to focus resources, introduce innovation and promote collaboration. The benefits of outsourcing takes advantage of all that outsourcing offers; or, risks the loss to those who do.

The Most Appropriate Educational Toys For Your Children

Children learn about the world through toys. Different toys fulfill different developmental and educational purposes, and understanding this variety and the needs of your child will help you in selecting the most appropriate toys for your child.

Here are some significant needs of children that can be fulfilled by the right kind of toys:

Creative development: Lewis Carrolls Alice captured the essence of childhood with her eager phrase: Lets pretend... Watch how many things your child can do with an empty cardboard box. Other examples: Clay, paint, dolls, crayons, play dough.

Intellectual development: Just pulling a simple wagon, your child is learning about the relationship between force and velocity. Other examples are books, miniature ovens, bicycles and science kits.

Physical development: Through toys and games, children develop their strength, motor skills, hand-eye coordination and muscle control. Toys for this are balls, bikes, blocks, shovels, and all outdoor games.

Sensory development: Children learn about textures, smells, colors and sounds through toys. The toys for this are musical instruments, clay, blocks, puzzles.

Social development: Through toys, children learn about each other and about friendship. They learn how to get along with others, and the mechanics of personal relationships. What happens when your child builds a sandcastle together with a friend? What happens when your child refuses to share a toy? Board games, dolls and puzzles are some toys that can help your childs social development.

Personality development: Games and toys build confidence and self-esteem in children, and help them learn about themselves through their likes and dislikes. Solving a puzzle, building a house with blocks, riding a bike -- all these exercises help your child feel a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

The best toys for your child are the ones that provide an enriching learning experience in a fun way and are helpful in the development of basic skills of your child. It is important that you think deeply before buying a toy for your child and evaluate what learning experience your child will have while playing with that toy.

Using Toys

With time, your child will learn how to take responsibility for her choices, actions, and belongings. The following are some guidelines with which you can help your child become responsible without compromising on her safety:

Talk to your child about proper care and storage of toys. Fix a place of storage and do not allow toys to be left on the floor or outside the house.

If there is more than one child, separate their toys to make sure that the younger ones may not play with toys appropriate for older children. Explain this, and related safety hazards, to the older children.

Participate in your childs play and set good examples of safe play. After playtime, show them how to put the toys away safely, and slowly allow your child to take responsibility for the toys.

Teach your child to recognize unsafe toys and safety hazards. Check their toys (especially electric ones) regularly for damage, and urge them to let you know if a toy breaks or seems unsafe.

Appropriate and Allowable Toys for Children

In this chapter, we will discuss the skills and needs of children at different ages, and accordingly choose safe and appropriate toys for each age group.

3 to 4 years

During this time, children use their imagination to imitate adult activity, and participate actively in physical games. Their knowledge of safety hazards and self-defense also increases.

Appropriate toys: Puppets, farm and community play sets like tea sets, climbing structures, miniature ovens, toy telephones, simple board games, tricycles, boxes, dolls and stuffed animals, water play toys, puzzles, balls, simple musical instruments etc.

4 to 6 years

At this age, children learn about social skills and cooperation by participating in preschool group games. Their physical coordination develops, and the foundation of printing and writing is also laid at this time.

Appropriate toys: Transportation vehicles of all types like
bicycles with helmets and training wheels toys, drop boxes, sleds, creative materials, painting material, books and records, stencils, puzzles, balls, action figures, dress-up clothes, housekeeping props,
dollhouses, character toys, simple construction toys etc.

6 to 9 years

Children learn about getting along with others, and about the adult world of sports, games, and careers. At this stage, children develop their intellectual and social interests and make strong friendships, likes and dislikes.

Appropriate toys: Board games, marbles, jacks, puppets, doll equipment and accessories, craft kits, construction toys, complex puzzles, jump ropes, art material of all kinds, roller and ice skates etc.

9 to 12 years

Preteens become active in team play and learn how to handle detailed projects in arts and science. They learn to prioritize their interests and give more time to select hobbies. They also begin to operate video games and computers.

Appropriate toys: Skates, skateboards, science kits, craft kids, tested and approved electric toys, electric trains (UL approved), construction sets, science kits, craft kits, costumes, larger bicycles prop boxes, puppets, fashion and career dolls, doll house and furniture, musical instruments, books of specific interest, work bench with real tools etc.

It is important to remember that children are different and have individual characteristics and interests. Only you can know your childs specific interests and abilities at the different stages of their development, by supervising and participating in their play.

Do Fats Fit Into A Healthy Dinner Recipe?

If youre like me you are often looking for a quick and healthy dinner recipe, but you are concerned about the amount of fat in some choices. However, fats are essential to

the proper functioning of our bodies. Among other things, fats help maintain cell membrane integrity and they help nerve transmission and nutrient absorption. However, if

consumed in excess quantities, fats can lead to weight gain, heart disease and various types of cancer. Be aware that not all fats are alike. Some fats contribute to our

well-being and some can be quite harmful, increasing the risk of developing heart disease.

So your (quick) healthy dinner recipe should contain a certain amount of fat. But how much fat do we need exactly? The Zone, a popular diet, suggests that the calories we

consume should come from carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the following proportion: 40%, 30% and 30%, respectively. We dont necessarily have to drastically follow

this advice; it should only serve as a general reference. The key is to replace the bad fats in our meals with good ones.

Here is a quick review of the different types of fat.

* Saturated Fats

Saturated fats cause an increase of blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, which are the bad cholesterol. Products that have high saturated fat content include meat, eggs,

dairy products and seafood. A few plant foods, like coconut oil, palm kernel oil and palm oil also contain high amounts of saturated fats.

* Trans Fats

Trans fatty acids are the result of the industrial process of "hydrogenating" liquid oils. This process was devised in an attempt to make food products last longer. Trans fats

are commonly found in packaged foods, in commercially fried food (e.g., French fries), in packaged snacks (e.g., microwaveable popcorn), and in hard stick margarine and

vegetable shortening.

* Monounsaturated Fats

Monounsaturated fats are the good fats because they cause blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol to decrease, and at the same time, increase HDL cholesterol or the good

cholesterol. Products that contain high levels of monounsaturated fats include olive oil, canola oil and nuts. Look for these ingredients in any healthy dinner recipe, like salad

dressing made with olive oil.

* Polyunsaturated Fats

Similar to monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats help lower total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. High levels of polyunsaturated fats are found in safflower oil,

sunflower oil, corn oil, fish oil, and seafood like salmon. The Omega-3 fatty acids fall under this type of fats.

Some Things You Can Do to Avoid the Bad Fats

* Use only cooking oils that have low amounts of saturated fats and high amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (e.g., olive oil, flax seed oil and canola oil).

* Stay away from commercially packaged foods since they have high trans fat content.

* Read food labels and go with those that are trans fat free.

* Avoid saturated fats by opting for low-fat versions of dairy products (e.g., skim milk).

* Go for lean meats. Make sure the visible fats and the skins are removed.

Following this advice will help make sure you benefit the most from a nutritious, healthy dinner recipe.

How To Compare Residential VOIP Offerings

Many people are turning to VOIP phone for several different reasons, the biggest reason being cost. The landline telephone has been in existence for one hundred years; however, many people are finding that VOIP offers a great deal more, for a great deal less. There is one requirement though, you must have a broadband connection, otherwise known as a highspeed Internet connection. While there are some minor differences between the traditional telephone and a VOIP phone, many people simply enjoy the money saving features.

What cost savings you say? With a VOIP phone (using your highspeed Internet connection to make and receive phone calls), you can make unlimited local and usually also unlimited long distance calls in the continental US for one price, where that one price is frequently less than the cost of just getting a DIAL TONE from your local phone company. Is it starting to make more sense now?

With VOIP, you receive comparable reliability and quality of traditional telephone service without all the added fees we tend to experience from our phone company. Have you ever opened your bill and noticed the big jump in cost? Here is a personal example, this writer has experienced with a local telephone company. I simply have a phone, yes some of the perks as well, such as call waiting, call waiting plus, caller ID, and caller ID plus. When I ordered the service, of course it was all conveniently placed in a package that was to cost me $35 a month. Imagine my surprise when I open my phone bill and it was $89 for the month, that is just the phone, does not include the cost of internet, which put the bill over $100.

Now you are probably thinking well long distance calls will do that. Yes, it would, except I purposely do not have long distance on my telephone, so that was not the case in this scenario. I had a ton of hidden charges for this, that, and everything else. Now with a VOIP phone, it hooks up directly to your internet connection, and most VOIP providers offer several different packages that are designed to fit both your needs and your budget. For example, one company offers unlimited long distance calling, local calling, plus all the perks such as E-911 service, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, Call forwarding, 3-way calling, and such others, for only $24.99. That is your bill, one flat rate each month. Tell me, which you would rather pay, $89 a month or $24.99 for just about the same service. The choice is clear.

When considering a VOIP phone it is important that you do some comparison shopping. The internet is full of fabulous deals from VOIP providers and it is important that you take a look at the various companies and find the one that fits your needs, as well as your budget. Another thing about VOIP is that you can choose from several different packages with each provider. Some may include a VOIP phone line with long distance, without long distance, or for multiple phone lines, perfect for kids phone or a home office.

There are some disadvantages to VOIP service. For example, your fax machine may not work reliably over the VOIP. Furthermore, if you have satellite internet within your home, you may find that the VOIP fails to work in a reliable manner as well. It is very important that you do your homework, finding out exactly what options you have, and what works best for your specific needs.

Jon Arnold is a computer engineer and long-term world traveler who maintains many websites to pass along his knowledge and findings. You can read more about VOIP and a comparison of popular VOIP offerings at his web site at http://www.voipinsideinfo.com Gusta Blog77498

Prepaid Cell Phones and Emergency Service

Everybody is familiar with 9-1-1 service, which allows you to easily contact emergency services from your home phone. But what about your cell? Emergencies can happen when you're away from home. And even while you're at home, more households are moving towards a single-line solution, replacing their landline phones with mobile.

The FCC requires all cellular carriers to put through all 9-1-1 calls, even when the phone does not have an active service contract. Individuals who have medical conditions may do well to carry an emergency cell phone, even if they do not use a cell phone on a regular basis. It is also an ideal solution for the elderly, who may be at risk while out and about. Keeping an emergency cell phone in the car's glove compartment, along with a portable charger, can help avert a disaster in case of a breakdown or accident in a remote area.

The so-called E911 (enhanced 911) service, mandated by the FCC, also requires carriers to implement a system that tells emergency dispatchers the location of the caller. This has been a part of landline emergency services for several years, and when you call 9-1-1 from your home phone, the dispatcher automatically knows your callback number and your fixed location. But on a mobile phone, there are some technological challenges. Fortunately, the cell phone companies stepped up to the plate and came up with a solution. In Phase I of the FCC mandate, carriers had to create a system that would tell dispatchers the cell phone number of the caller, as well as the location of the cell tower, which would provide at least an approximate geographic location. More sophisticated location detection technology uses GPS-enabled cell phones to determine the location of the caller in an emergency.

Phase II, scheduled to be fully implemented by the end of 2005, goes a step further by providing Automatic Location Identification (ALI), with precise latitude and longitude of the caller, to the emergency dispatcher. This capability has been incorporated into many newer cell phones, but there are still older cell phones still in use. If you plan to use your cell phone as an emergency backup, make sure you have a newer "location-sensitive" phone that is equipped to handle this service.

There is no charge for calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone; the E911 infrastructure is paid for with a small surcharge on normal cell phone services.

New England Patriots 2006 Games

The New England Patriots are going to have their most difficult season in recent memory. They face the realistic possibility of finishing 8-8 or 9-7. While many expect them to fight for the AFC East title, most are not giving it to them easily as in years past. The Miami Dolphins are expected to challenge this season. The Patriots are opening up the season at home against division rival Buffalo. Following is the games schedule for the New England Patriots.

Week One: Buffalo Bills
Week Two: @ New York Jets
Week Three: Denver Broncos
Week Four: @ Cincinnati Bengals
Week Five: Miami Dolphins
Week Six: Bye
Week Seven: @ Buffalo Bills
Week Eight: @ Minnesota Vikings
Week Nine: Indianapolis Colts
Week Ten: New York Jets
Week Eleven: @ Green Bay Packers
Week Twelve: Chicago Bears
Week Thirteen: Detroit Lions
Week Fourteen: @ Miami Dolphins
Week Fifteen: Houston Texans
Week Sixteen: @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Week Seventeen: @ Tennessee Titans

If the New England Patriots play well this season, they have 8 games that are relatively easy. The Bills (twice), Jets (twice), Packers, Lions, Texans and Titans should pose little difficulty for a good team. The Bills might present a little more of challenge as they will probably play the Patriots well for at least one of the two games.

The hype is on the Dolphins. If they are half as good as people expect, they will give the Patriots two difficult games. While the Dolphins beat the Patriots at the end of last season, the game was meaningless. You could argue that the Patriots had a tougher schedule last season. This year the schedule is slightly easier, but you have to take into account all the changes in the offseason.

The Patriots could end up 10-6 given the schedule, but it's likely that they will lose at least 1-2 of the "easy" games to take away from any gains made in the harder contests. Will 8-8 or 9-7 be enough to win the AFC East? It just might. Just about no one expects the Bills or Jets to contend for much of anything. This leaves the AFC East up to a two team battle. The title may very well be decided by who dominates the two game series between the Patriots and Dolphins. The first game between these two is in week five at New England. The second game is in Miami in week 14.

URL Forwarding and Redirection

Webmasters and common Internet users have a constant need for URL forwarding and redirection. The reason is that there are many long URLs that are not convenient to use. So why would someone want to use it? Heres a few common cases:

For Your own use:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=new%20york%20map%20brooklin&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

Of course its not convenient to use and its impossible to remember.

When Does Copyright Expire On My Music?

The expiration date on your copyrighted music isn't something you have to worry about, at least not in your lifetime. The music that you've written is copyrighted the moment you've put it onto paper or recorded it. The reason you don't have to worry about expiration is because the music is protected until 70 years after the death of the author. In the case of your music, that author would be you.

This rule about copyright music expiration was first put into place so that the families and heirs of an author could still earn royalties even after his or her death. Ultimately this means that if you've taken the steps to copyright your music and have registered the copyright, then your music will be protected throughout your lifetime until 70 years after you or the last surviving author (assuming a collaboration) is deceased.

Copyright music expiration is not something you should make a primary concern unless you are having issues of someone respecting and/or honoring your copyright at the moment. You should take comfort in the fact that as long as you are alive you are the only one who can assign your copyright to another person; and as long as you haven't given up your ownership of the music it still belongs to you.

This is different, however, if your copyrighted music was work made for hire. If that is the case then you cannot have ownership of the music, as it never legally belonged to you, but the person or entity who hired you to produce the music. Works made for hire have different copyright music expiration than those owned by the creator. With works made for hire, the copyrights are in effect for 95 years from the original publication date or for 120 years from the creation of the work, whichever of the two is shorter.

Cheap Used Cars For Sale Online Blue Book

As I am writing this article, my hopes are that it would change the way some of the readers approach the used car market. My intention is to briefly discuss the notions of cheap used cars, for sale online, bluebook. Each issue is to be discussed individually, then I will summarize by the way you can put the three issues, or terms to work for your benefit.

As I always stress, buying a used car is only done every couple of years or so. Therefore, with minimal time, and effort you can accomplish results, which will ultimately save you money. Based on your research, you would be prepared to take a better final decision. If you are on a tight budget, it doesnt hurt to buy a car that is cheap, thats what some people like to call it. However, this should not be misinterpreted, because you should differentiate between bad and cheap. You must realize that not every cheap car would cost a fortune to maintain aka bad, and that not every bad car is a cheap car. That is why I dont suggest that you enter the market looking for a cheap car; rather you should have the intention of buying an affordable car, one that would fit your budget.

Now that I covered the term cheap used cars for sale, online, blue book are next. If someone is willing to spend money to sell their car, then the odds are that they took good care of their car over the ownership period. On the other side, if an individual is not willing to pay the small listing fee to advertise their car, then, I would leave the perception of the way they maintained their car on you. But please, dont justify the fact, with the power f the internet and auto trader, sellers can now list their cars till sold, costing not much more than an oil change.

When a sentence contains cheap used, cars, for sale online. Blue book arises almost every time. This is however not as some people think for no reason, or a hoax. Blue book experts has been around for over 75 years, this allowed them to master the process of appraising car values, and for this exact reason a number of banks in the united states use it to determine the value of car loans. I will dedicate an entire section on my website to guide you through using the different value indicators, and prove to you the importance of such books, and guides.

To conclude, the title Cheap used cars for sale online blue book is a misleading or maybe confusing article title. On the other hand, when you are on a tight budget the process should be a converse of the title Cheap used cars for sale online blue book.

Blog Search - Does Anyone Really Do That?

What do Google Blog Search, Technorati, Blogwise, IceRocket and Blogger all have in common? BLOGS... and lot's of them. People from all walks of life are jumping on the blogging band-wagon these days. And why shouldn't they? It's free of charge in most cases, and anyone can do it. You don't have to be a computer expert to create your own nook on the world wide web anymore.

But with all of these new blogs being created daily, there needs to be a way to consolidate, categorize and locate them. That's where blog search engines and directories come in. The previously mentioned blog search engines are only a drop in the bucket, however. There are many, many others out there. But there is a question among critics going around that needs answering- "Does anyone actually use blog search engines or directories"?

Well, I will answer their question with another question- "Would Google jump into something nobody would use"?

To question the usefullness of blog search is like questioning the usefullness of THE FOOD NETWORK. Just because you don't enjoy cooking does not mean that nobody else does. Is the blogosphere self-driven? Of course! But then again, so is the Food Network, and any other market. So that's not an applicable arguement either.

The claims that blog search engines and directories are useless is propelled by people who don't like the idea of the "average Joe" (or Jane for that matter) being able to have his own virtual web site. These individuals feel less special because grandma now has her own internet address, even though she could not write a line of code to save her life.

When I started my blog directory, I ran into a lot of criticism from people who felt insecure in this way. I received e-mail telling me my blog directory was "worthless", and that "nobody uses blog directories". I am glad I did not let them get to me. Today my directory receives more traffic than I ever could have hoped for, and it is growing every month. I also frequent other blog directories and search engines in support of the blogosphere as well.

Maybe someday the blog search critics will get over themselves, and join in on the wonderful world of blogging. Am I being overly optimistic? Maybe. But then again, who knows?

Atherogenesis

The putative ability of fish oils to affect cardiovascular health has focused considerable attention on lipid nutriture. Investigations of societies consuming high levels of omega-3 and -9 oils as well as both prospective and retrospective scientific studies have demonstrated the increasing importance of dietary fats.1-6 Complex mechanisms have been theorized but ultimately hinge on eicosanoid synthesis pathways. Fatty acids and other lipid substances such as cholesterol found within the circulation and as a part of the endothelial lining of blood vessels and their smooth muscle coat, and within platelets, provide an important substrate for vascular health or disease.

PLATELETS

Platelets play a pivotal role in the relationship between lipids and atherogenesis. Blood platelets are powerful biochemical packages wrapped in a phospholipid membrane. When platelets in the circulation are exposed to broken endothelial tissue lining blood vessels and underlying collagen. they become activated to stimulate the healing of the injury.

The arachidonic acid within the platelet forms two different eicosanoids, which serve two opposing functions. If the platelet is next to another platelet, thromboxane (TXA2) is formed (500 million platelets can form as much as 2 mg of thromboxane) which stimulates the aggregation and clotting of platelets and other blood components.7 For those platelets near the endothelium, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is formed which stimulates hyperplasia in the exposed blood vessel tissue and inhibits further clotting adjacent to the injury. Prostaglandins also stimulate bone resorption bringing calcium to the site of the injury to decrease tissue pH and further stimulate hyperplasia.

These are normal mechanisms occurring continually and are essential to life. If they did not occur, minor vascular lesions could lead to runaway hemorrhage, and healing and repair would not happen. However, when there is an excess of omega-6 fatty acids in platelets which can generate excess amounts of arachidonic acid at blood vessel injury sites, the blood clotting, vessel constricting, bone resorbing, and hyperplastic effects can exceed the countering moderating effects of prostaglandins from fatty acids such as the omega-3's.

PATHOGENESIS

High levels of dietary fat can result in high levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL). These protein-lipid complexes can contain large amounts of cholesterol, much of which can be oxidized as a result of the way modern foods are processed.8 LDL can migrate to areas of injury, be engulfed by monocytes and macrophages, and accumulate at the site of these injuries to provide more arachidonic acid and free radical generating oxidized cholesterol fuel for further endothelium damage.

This ongoing cycle, beginning with perhaps a small lesion which occurs as a matter of course in the endothelium, or induced injury as a result of high blood levels of oxidized fats, may turn out to be a self-perpetuating, out-of-control, cancerlike growth accumulating in vessels resulting in atheromas and eventual closure of coronary vessels leading to heart attacks. Additionally, hardening (sclerosis) of the arteries can result in hypertension and loss of vascular resiliency, potentially causing stroke, aneurysms, general loss of health and vigor, and predisposition to a range of other diseases.

In other words, if there is vascular injury, the normal clotting, vessel constricting, tissue regenerating mechanisms can run out of control as a result of an imbalance of moderating e1cosanoids which are ultimately derived from dietary lipids. In tissue with excess arachidonic cascade potential, vessel injury recruits excess platelets, which stimulate excess clotting, vessel constriction and vessel wall inflammation,

[ Atherosclerosis Sequence Image ]

http://www.wysong.net/articles/lipid/figures/figure26.jpg

which in turn releases more arachidonic cascade eicosanoids, which stimulate further platelet aggregation, clotting and so on, leading to atheroma and vessel closure.

If there is no initial endothelial injury but it is being induced from high oxidized lipid blood levels, a similar cycle occurs. Oxidized LDL's are scavenged by monocytes which become macrophages, which accumulate within the vessel wall causing free radical damage, foam cell formation, calcium deposition and inflammation. This produces arachidonic cascade metabolites, which further induce inflammation leading to progressive atheroma and vessel closure. (Fig. 26, 27)

PREVENTION RATIONALE

An alteration of the diet such that oxidized fats are decreased, saturated fats are decreased, omega-6 fats are decreased (in Western societies), and omega-3 and omega-9 rich foods are increased may potentially result in a restoration of health to the vessel wall. Prostaglandins created by omega-3 and omega-9 oils create opposite effects to the vessel constricting, clot-forming effects of the omega-6 oils since they compete for the same enzyme system. (Refer to Fig. 18) Therefore, if omega-3 and -9 fatty acids are increased in the diet, they use up the enzyme systems normally used byarachidonic acid to form the atherogenic promoting eicosanoids. This is the present explanation for the epidemiological evidence showing that humans and animals consuming higher levels of the omega-3 and omega-9 classes of fatty acids develop far less of the common cardiovascular problems than exist in Western society.

There is some evidence that the incidence of cardiovascular disease is proportional to the ratios of fatty acid classes in platelets, which is in turn related to diet. Eskimos, for example, have a higher omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in their tissues reflecting their high fish diet, which is in turn related to their low risk of cardiovascular disease compared to Western nations. (Fig. 28)

[ The Formation Of Atheroma Image ]

http://www.wysong.net/articles/lipid/figures/figure27.jpg

This is not to say omega-6 fatty acids such as linoleic are harmful per se. Balance is key. Indeed if sufficient linoleic is not present, atherosclerosis can result as evidenced in a variety of species.9,10

ASPIRIN

By shifting the balance of these same eicosanoid enzyme systems, aspirin is also believed to exert its effect as an anticlotting agent in cardiovascular disease. Aspirin is a specific inhibitor (acetylator) of cyclooxygenase which normally is used to convert arachidonic acid into TXA2 and PGE2. Aspirin's inhibition of clot forming TXA2 is several days longer than its effect on anticoagulating and vasodilating PGE2. Thus the net effect is clot inhibition. (Refer to Fig. 19)

[ Comparative Dietary Oil/Fat Composition Image ]

http://www.wysong.net/articles/lipid/figures/figure28.jpg

However, aspirin is a bandage. It does not address the root cause, which is dietary impropriety. It is also not without its dangers since it can precipitate allergic reactions such as asthma by shunting arachidonic acid into the lipoxygenase leukotriene path and may actually increase platelet clotting if given in conjunction with fish oils.11

Excess consumption of oxidized fats and fatty acids of the omega-6 family will fuel the atherosclerotic system. Excess raw materials can exceed the ability of moderators. If the root cause is dietary, the ultimate solution must therefore also be dietary, not pharmacologic. It is ironic that the 80 million aspirin tablets taken daily by Americans may in large part be necessary to cancel the effects of 15 million pounds of omega-6-predominant processed polyunsaturated oils.

NUTRIENTS

Many nutrients found within foods have the ability to block or modulate prostaglandin synthesis. These include sulfur compounds found in garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables, and various minerals, particularly the divalent cations zinc, copper, lithium, silver, selenium, and calcium.12 A variety of fresh whole foods, (raw if possible) grown on nutrient-rich soils (as opposed to modern agribusiness mined soils where only nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium -- NPK fertilizers -- are replaced) provides the body with raw materials which augment proper fatty acid nutrition and may lessen or obviate the need for potentially dangerous drugs.

Other nonpharmacologic factors which may help produce more "friendly" lipid profiles include decreased stress, increased exercise and the elimination of tobacco and perhaps caffeine.13 Highly refined carbohydrate and sugar diets increase cardiovascular disease risk perhaps through increased glycosylation reactions, increased lipoprotein (a) levels and decreasing HDL levels.14 Calcium at 800 mg per day can decrease cholestero1.15 Chromium deficiency can decrease glucose tolerance factor and thus affect sugar metabolism and adversely affect lipid proflies.16Legumes, soluble fiber, garlic and onions can decrease cholesterol levels.17 Vitamin C at 1000 mg per day and vitamin E at 200-400 I.U. per day are excellent antioxidants and can decrease glycosylation reactions, decrease cholesterol and increase HDL'S.18 Pantethine, a derivative of pantothenic acid at 300 mg. 3-4 times daily,19 and niacin from 1-4 grams daily can positively affect lipids. Niacin in fact is one of the few agents capable of lowering genetically controlled Lp(a) levels.20 L-carnitine, an amino acid, at 1000 mg per day can ameliorate hyperlipoproteinemia.21

These nutrients are supplied in a varied whole raw food diet. Some researchers argue, however, that therapeutic levels of some nutrients are not possible from simply consuming natural foods. An accumulated deficit from a lifetime of dietary indiscretion may indeed require a boost. Disease, an extraordinary event, may require extraordinary measures to effect a cure. But before consuming any isolated nutrient become well aware of its merits and demerits since some nutrients can present toxicities or imbalances at certain levels. Guidance by a well qualified nutritional health care professional would be advised for anyone with existing disease who desires to use isolated nutrients in therapy.

As mentioned in the previous chapter, the case for the link between diet and heart disease is not closed. Some argue that the diet-heart hypothesis began, remains, and grows because of the support of powerful institutions and personalities who subserve gigantic health-disease and food industries.22 Some have calculated that for persons aged 20-62 that a lifelong program of cholesterol reduction might increase life expectancy three days to thirty months.23 Even Sir William Osler, the most highly respected physician of his time, said in 1879 that arterial degeneration could occur even at a young age and was due to "the high pressure in which men live, and habit of working the machine to its maximum capacity," not to excesses in eating and drinking. 24

There is little doubt that singular focus on diet or exercise, for example, misses the mark. It ignores equally important factors such as self esteem, affectionate relationships and feeling in control of one's life.25 The controversy aside, living and eating in a more natural synergonic context can only help and is likely the greatest potential for life free from disease.

Kenyan Sitatunga: The Very Rare, Endemic And Shy Antelope

A rare sight, this red- earth antelope species has splayed hooves for walking in muddy places.

I finally get to see a situnga for the first time in my life. In bird lingo when you see a bird for the first time, its a lifer for you. But the situnga is an antelope and a very rare one indeed. I wonder how I can term these experience, to see one of the worlds rarest antelopes on a road=side swamp, which happens to have no protection but yet harbors one of the largest population in the country.

When I first saw the sitatunga in 1999 here, I was surprised. It was the same kind I had seen at the Saiwa Swamp many years ago, recounts Mzee Kipkel Maiyo from the area. I reported the sighting to the KWS office in the area and a team came to see if it was true.

Kinwal swamp lies on the Eldoret Kapsabet road. The tarmac string runs right through the swamp and it is quite unbelievable that a rare antelope lives in the midst of the papyrus swamp lining it.

Its a lovely sunny morning and we are walking along the main road trying to see though the enormous papyrus flowers for the rare red-earth colored antelope that has splayed hooves specially adapted for walking in muddy swamps. A pair of white butterflies flitting by the grasses grabs our attention as they settle on a stalk of grass looks like love is in the air.

Kingwal swamp is surrounded by people who cultivate right around it and divert the water to there farm. Yet the farm has been expanding because of siltation. Were getting the running commentary from Mary Mbenge, a young woman who knows the swamp like the back of her hand.

This swamp is not legally protected, she goes on, yet it has more sitatunga compared to Saiwa swamp or Lewa Down.

Three crowned cranes peck on the farmers ploughed fields by the swamp. This road is actually very useful, continues Mary, because it acts as a fire breaker. She recalls an incident when a fire did break out but did not spread to the other side of the road. It saved the situnga.

By this time, were getting impatient to see the elusive antelope. Dont worry, you will see them says the young woman confidently. Im not quite sure because from the literature Ive read, they prefer to come out during the cooler part of the day=early morning or late evenmg. Its now approaching midday and the sun is burning.

Well drive in .The swamp stretches seven kilometers inland on this side of the road. You will meet some villagers and members of the environment group who will tell you more.

With that, we jump into our hired matatu and with Mary Mbege acting as the navigator; we brave the beaten track inland. The Nandi home steads are picturesque sitting on pretty farms. The ploughing season is on and every one is busy tilling the land for preparation for the rains. More crowned cranes grace the fields. Finally; we reach a homestead and walk through it to the swamp which is thick with papyrus, reeds and other water plants. A red fireball lily breaks the monotone green. Ladder leans against a tall tree. Its one of the situnga towers from where can hopefully spot the antelope.

When I counted them in 2004 they were 67.Saiwa Swamp has fewer than 12 there was six that were Tran located to Lewa Down in Laikipia a few years ago. You will see them, she repeats with the same confisence. She is one of the first to study the swamp, starting as a Bsc student on world life management at Moi University. Hooked by the beauty and rare sightings in the area, shes been around for six years now, working with the community and starting environment clubs.

The swamp is busy with birds and spots what look like otters swimming in a pool in the swamp. We trudge through to get a closer look with the sun hot on our backs. Its then that one member of Tasike Setanda, the local environment group, spots the Sitatunga among the reeds.

The excitement is palpable. We scoot through the reeds to get to exact spot and crane our necks for a glimpse. All we can see is its nose sticking out of the reeds and a spot of the rich red color of its coat. We deem ourselves lucky, consoling ourselves that to see even the nose tip of a rare antelope is really lucky.

Okay, were now going to that homestead, announces Mary .A stunning red flowered tree marks the homestead. If you dont mind getting your feet wet, we can walk through the swamp or drive around it.

By now, faint with anger most of us opt for the car. Our lunch is in it too. Mary and a few other friends walk through the swamp. I like the confidence of this young woman who made complete map of the swamp with Gaps markings for her bachelors degree project. What she doesnt tell us is that with the muddy terrain, it will take us almost an hour to drive around the swamp while she wades through the swamp in a matter of minutes.

Again, we walk through the earlier homestead to reach the swamp lining it. Another ladder is propped against a tall tree. I think the Nandi has built a ladder to their specifications forgetting that short people can not climb rungs that almost reach their chest. The sportier ones among us are up the tree=tower and in the clearing of the swamp among seconds. They spot a pair of sitatunga coolly having there lunch break.

I cannot come almost 400 kilometers from Nairobi to see a swamp antelope and not see it because of the inappropriately built ladder. The guys are great and help improvise the ladder and with much heave and hoi scale the ladder and see the sitatunga=in the swamp clearing. Its a historical moment for all of us seeing it at the first time. I told you youd see he sitatunga, says Mary smugly. The local people do not hunt this species, thats why we can see them almost any time during the day. And another thing. The Nandi do not even have a word for the sitatunga because they have never seen the antelope before.

Satisified, we clamber down to a picnic lunch by the swamp.

FACT FILE

SWAMP SECRET

Kingwal swamp is 25 kilometers from Eldoret towards Kaosabet. Its slightly bigger than Saiwa swamp which is a protected national park for the sitatunga. Kingwal currently measures 2.73 square kilometers. Saiwa Swamp near Kitale is 1.89 square kilometers.

The sitatunga once numerous around the swamps of Kenya is now listed as a threatened animal. This is because swamps in Kenya havent being managed properly, most being drained for other purposes. In other parts of Africa they are numerous where the wetlands are left alone.

Feng Shui Improves Life

Copyright 2006 Rob Daniels

Business people as well as common folks throughout the world improve all aspects of their lives using Feng Shui. Although the exact origins of feng shui are debatable, it is thought to have originated in China about five thousand years ago. According to Feng Shui cultural and social issues are influenced by natural, metaphysical and cosmological factors.

Anyone that has researched Feng Shui history knows that this level of interaction between all things is the theory of chi. Although chi is present everywhere, it pools in special places which are very auspicious in feng shui. When a less than auspicious placement occurred, Feng Shui cures were sought to change the flow of energy. This inclusion of nature into the living environment is the first point in Feng Shui and it provides solid ground for higher levels above. The art of Feng Shui is the balancing of energies through adjusting the relationships of particular items in the environment. In Feng Shui, a home and family were lucky if they were blessed to be placed in the most auspicious surroundings.

Feng Shui is an ancient discipline which shifts the chi (life force energy) in your home to improve your life. It is becoming better known in the West for one good reason: It works wonders. One of the basic rules when decorating with feng shui is to make sure that the path of energy, whether good or bad, cannot flow through your home. This happens when windows are directly across from each other, or doors are directly in front of a window. When good energy flows through your home, you can have good luck one day and bad the next, since the good energy has just flown through. When bad energy flows through your home, it is believed to cause more than just bad luck, including death and pain. Although the bad energy can flow out of your home, it leaves its wrath and can be hard to fully get rid of.

When a neighbor's driveway points toward your front entrance, counter it by affixing a pa-k'ua mirror to the door. Pa-ku'a mirrors are usually available at Chinese gift stores. A pa-k'ua mirror can also be used against sharp, pointed objects directed at your house for instance, TV antennas, protruding tree branches, or spiky architectural features. Place a large mirror behind the stove so that you won't be surprised when someone comes up behind you. Hang a mirror up at the end of a hallway so that it does not seem like a dead end. If the West section is missing in your home, you can install a bright light or a mirror to partially remedy this problem. You can also activate the West section of your bedroom as well. Do not sleep facing a mirror. The water element of the mirror will cause ill health. Avoid having any water feature in the bedroom such as aquariums, paintings of rivers and lakes, computers or televisions.

Avoid sleeping in a room where a toilet or washing machine is located upstairs. Sleeping underneath an exposed overhead beam will cause headaches, depending on where the beam 'hits'.

Arrange furniture so you can face the doors while sitting. Make the environment much more comfortable by arranging seating areas away from drafts and adjusting lighting. Clean up clutter to encourage relaxation and help you to find things easier.

Widen the front walkway to your home to make it more inviting. Be sure paths between rooms and through rooms are wide and easy to use. This allows you to walk around easily, as well as promotes chi. Oil your doors so they don't squeak, reducing mental irritation.

Fresh flowers will spread their fragrance all over so decorate flower vases with beautiful red roses and tulip flowers and place them at different corners in the house.

To arrange furniture always start with an empty room. Once a room is empty, you can then fill it one piece at a time. You should begin with the larger pieces, like the couch, bed, television, etc. When placing each item, analyze whether the object is relevant to the area and whether people can flow through the room without running into anything. Ask yourself if you really need it in the room you are working on, or if it would better fit into another room, or if you should donate it, to goodwill. You do not have to put everything back into the room that you took out. Get rid of whatever you have left after arranging each room. This is considered clutter and can slow down your positive energy.

Arrange furniture so you can face the doors while sitting. Mirrors are good in most rooms, but once again avoid their use in the bedroom (invites third parties into the relationship) and also they should not face the front door as this causes Chi to bounce back and out the door. They are good for use in long corridors, kitchens with stoves facing the wall and living rooms where you cannot see the front door from when seated. Make the environment much more comfortable by arranging seating areas away from drafts and adjusting lighting.

Air Pollution And Air Purifiers

It doesnt matter where you are, as long as you are not in one of those hi-tech labs or anything, you will be encountered with polluted air. These days air purifiers are being sold with the promise of cleansing this air. But before you invest on an air purifier it helps if you understand what are the sources of pollution and how air is actually polluted.

A) Pollution due to Particulates: Generally not visible to the naked eye particulates would be made up of dust, dust mites, dust mite feces, pet dander, skin flakes, pollen, smoke particles and allergens.

Generally a purifier with HEPA filters and the ionizers together are good enough to deal with the particulates.

B) Pollution caused by Odor: The source of odor can be wide ranging. It can be coming from food, pets, our own bodies, cigarettes, clothing, etc. Although odors are not necessarily dangerous, but they can leave you with an unpleasant feeling which you wouldnt want.

The purifiers which have active carbon filters in them are the best to deal with the problem of odor.

C) Pollution caused by Microbials: Microbials would include bacteria, fungi, mildew, mold spores and viruses. Normal filters wouldnt be able to deal with them as some of them can be as small as .001 microns. Compared to that HEPA filters can be effective for anything above the size of 0.3 microns. Microbials have their homes in warm, damp places like under the carpet, in the walls and in the heating and and air conditioning ducts of our homes.

The best way to deal with microbials is to have those devices that can produce oxidation. They help in killing these microbials.

D) Pollution caused by Chemical Fumes and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): The source of this pollution are chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde. The fumes of these are constantly being released by our carpets, upholstery, furniture, draperies, household cleaning products, etc. Other sources would include cigarette smoke, construction materials, etc. Many of them have been identified as carcinogens.

The best available solution today in the market are those devices that produce oxidation. This is a serious kind of air pollution and must be dealt adequately.

Now that you are acquainted with all the major types of air pollution you are in a better state to deal with them. Knowledge brings power, and now you have the power to choose rightly, to choose the exact air purifier you will need.

Credit Repair - It's All About Saving Money

Why is credit repair important? It comes down to one simple thing - saving money.

Everyone has a credit report. It turns out that about 70% of all credit reports contain inaccurate or untimely information. This can have an adverse effect on your credit score and that can cost you money. Credit repair is the process you undertake to remove or correct these errors on your credit report.

The great thing about repairing your credit is it's not difficult to do. The first step is to obtain a copy of your credit report. If you have been turned down for a loan or credit, you are entitled to a free credit report within 60 days of the rejection. You are also entitled to 1 free report from each of the 3 credit reporting agencies each year.

The next step is to let the credit reporting agency know in writing what information you think is inaccurate and request that it be removed or corrected. Make sure you send the letter by certified mail so you have a receipt with a record of when you sent it. Always keep copies of your letters.

The credit reporting agencies have 30 days to investigate your dispute and get back to you. If they find the information under dispute to be inaccurate, they must notify all three credit reporting agencies and the creditor or organization that provided the information. All of them must correct the information in your file.

When the investigation is complete, the credit reporting agency will provide you with the results and a copy of your updated credit report for your review.

If the investigation does not resolve the issue, you can request to have a statement of the dispute added to your file and on future credit reports.

Then you need to send a letter to the creditor or organization that provided the inaccurate information, telling them that you dispute their information. Include all documents that support your position. If the creditor reports the information to a credit reporting agency, it must also include a notice of the dispute.

So why go through this exercise? Your credit score determines how much interest you pay on loans or credit. If you add up how much interest you pay on your car loan, home mortgage and insurance, you can see just how much money is at stake - it can be thousands, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. It can even determine if you get a job or not.

Credit repair is vital in making sure your credit report is accurate so you can save money - sometimes a great deal of money.

Applying car loan through online bring the element of cost effectiveness in the deal as it involves no or nominal overhead and processing cost. It also saves time, as request can be send to the lender as per the convenience of the person that is either from his office or from his house.

Loan quote enable the person to compare various car loan offers on the basis of the cost involved in them. The person is only needed to request for the loan quote from the lender. Through this the person can choose that car loan deal which has lowest cost involve in it but for that a thorough study of loan quote and comparison is needed.

Before the person is given with the loan quotation he is required to fill an application form which basically asks certain question such as for which car, the person wants to go and also may ask certain personal and financial details such as income, previous debts, credit score etc. And after estimating the need and preferences of the person, the lender provides the car loan quote. Sometimes, it is seen that lenders by considering the credit score of the person makes decision for lending them amount. But, this doesnt apply to the lender offering any bad credit car loan.

In brief, car loan quote caters certain advantages such as:

It help in comparing various car loan offers

It let the person know that how much the loan deal is competitive

Enable the person to thoroughly understand the every cost involved in the car loan deal

Usually, the person must try to avail loan from the lender to whom he is familiar with because this fact will enable him to avail car loan on competitive prices.

The Reality of The Date Rape Drug

April is Sexual Assault Month

Each month more than ten women of all ages and backgrounds contact our Adoption Center with the same experience- they have been victims of a date rape drug, and are now pregnant most of the time not knowing who got them pregnant. Just after Spring break, is a time when we see a peak in pregnancy. For many of these women a date rape drug was involved.

The U.S. Census, suggest that there may be 32,101 annual rape-related pregnancies among American women over the age of 18. With the adult pregnancy rate associated with rape estimated to be 4.7%.

Several college aged women have reported waking up in frat houses or apartments with no clothing on, finding themselves in strange surroundings with unknown people, or having actually been sexually assaulted while under the influence of a date rape drug.

Just recently our 18 yr old daughter shared her plans to celebrate her graduation with some girl friends in Cancun. Concerned with their safety and still wanting them to enjoy themselves. This prompted me to ask her- Do you and your friends know what rape drugs are and how they are used? Surprising she had heard very little on the topic, as most of the women that call us don't know either and wish someone had shared the following information.

Rohypnol is becoming the drug of choice for would-be rapist's .Most all predators target unsuspecting victims by slipping these illicit drugs into their beverages at parties, bars or nightclubs and dances. Rape drugs have the power to make one drink feel like six or more.

Laura a sophomore from Florida was one such call. Laura who attended a private party off campus recalls she was dancing when she feels it was when she left her beer that the perpetrator laced her drink. She recalls she only had one drink and started feeling kind of sick, then my memory got foggy, I started feeling drowsy, really dizziness, confused about where I was. My roommate was going to come with me to the party , but at the last minute she make other plans, I decided to go alone, which was my first mistake. She has no memory of what happened for the next 8 hours.

She woke up in a back room, in the club with bruises on her thighs, half naked and suspected that someone may have had sex with her, but couldn't remember who the person was or any other details. . She was hung over for days afterward.

Laurie blocked the whole incident from her mind and allowed a numbness to take over her feelings. Her grades fell and she found her mind wandering in class.

This is not uncommon for women that have been raped. This can be used as a defense mechanism against being overwhelmed with feelings or losing control and are common reactions to what has happened to them. Others become anxious or depressed.

In Laura's case she discovered 6 weeks later she was pregnant, she dropped out of college to have the baby and chose to have him adopted by a childless couple though our adoption center. "It was the only way I could make something good out of something so bad, I needed to do something positive and it wasn't the child's fault"

Laura recalls when she first found out how angry she was and scared, "I wouldn't have sex with a guy I didn't know. I have always been so careful of what I do and who I date. I was just so mad at myself for not being more careful, I didn't know if I had contracted a disease or HIV, it was very scary and embarrassing"

Toni was 19 yr old victim of a date rape drug in her freshman year in San Diego, during spring break. Assaulted at a party by a friend she met in a class and had known for almost a year. She kept saying "I considered him one of my best friends. He acted like he would protect me. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it actually happened to me, even now.

My body has been violated, my trust in him as a friend has been shaken and I feel betrayed... I keep saying to myself, "I know him, and he's not a terrible person - so it must have been something I said to him or did that got me into this mess." I don't remember and I keep trying to remember what I did, or said - what happened that night- my own judgment has been stunned!

"I just couldn't go through with an abortion after what happened- as hard as the pregnancy was for me, I have always believed there are no mistakes and this baby didn't cause this and should not be the one that suffered, I had done the suffering, abortion wasn't the answer to my problem" It took some time, but I chose a family that I knew would love this child no matter what. Even through the rape something came good out of it. Not what I had ever dreamt of when I started college. "I have never regretted giving birth and giving her life" I still have trouble trusting people, but am working on it.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, "Date Rape", is one of the fastest growing drug-facilitated, sexual assault crimes in America today. Two thirds of GHB is ingested by people aged 18-25 years old. And Ecstasy abuse has increased 500 percent over a five-year period.

Studies confirm that acquaintance rape occurs more commonly among college students, predominantly first year students, than among any other age group. A recent large study, found one in four college women reported being the victim of rape or attempted rape and 84% of their assailants were boyfriends or acquaintances. Most victims remember nothing of the incident except that the feeling of being violated. The same study found that one in four college men disclosed to having used sexual aggression with women, and one in twelve to committing sexual assault of some kind. These men will slip the drug into a woman's drink without their knowledge, most often in combination with beer, and wait for the drug to incapacitate the woman before sexual assaulting her. The assailants would go to parties to look for easy targets and opportunities and wait until the victim is too out of it to say "no" and then will have sex with them. Many men do it just to take advantage of women sexually. !

The drug is often added to punch or other open container drinks at fraternity parties, college functions and social gatherings, where it is reportedly given to female party goers in hopes of lowered their inhibitions and facilitating in a potential sexual conquest for the assailant. High risk situations are clubs, parties, bars, and raves. Women contacting us are of all backgrounds and ages. Many are still in some shock over being pregnant and are not sure of the race of the man than raped them, and have little to share about the "father" of their child.

The date rape drugs are often referred to as the "alphabet drugs" called "E" or Ecstasy, "G" which can be either GHB or GBL and "K" or "Special K" which is Ketamine. For a while Rohypnol or "Roofies" was one of the most popular date rape drugs, but it has been replaced by GHB as the date rape drug of choice. The most popular date-rape drugs are (GHB) gamma hydroxybutyrate and ketamine. The "date rape" drug or "sexual assault" drugs is the street name for Rohypnol because it has been associated with date rape. GHB is produced in clear liquid, white powder, tablet, and capsule forms. It is also been known common as: Rophies, Roofies, Roachies, Forget Pill ,R2, roofenol, Roche, circles, La rocha, Rope, Trip-and-Fall , Liquid X, Liquid E, G-Juice, Rib, Mexican Valium, Roach-2, Roopies, and Ropies, Mind-Erasers, Liquid Ecstasy," Somatomax , Scoop, or Grievous Bodily Harm.

Ketamine Also known as "K", "Special K" or "Vitamin K". Commonly comes in a liquid form, but is also found in powder or pill forms.

Rohypnol is not legal in the US, nor is not manufactured or sold legally in the United States. It is used as a short-term treatment for insomnia in other countries. It is produced and sold legally by prescription in Europe and Latin America, then smuggled into the United States by mail or travelers smuggled it in. The drug is often distributed on the street in its original "bubble packaging" which creates a false appearance of legitimacy and makes it appear to be harmless and legal. Rohypnol tablets are white, scored on one side, with the word "ROCHE" and an encircled one or two indicating the dosage on the other. Rohypnol is a low-cost drug, often less than $5.00 per tablet. They are sold in sealed bubble pack of one or two mg doses.

Rohypnol can be addictive and cause physical dependence. It has physiological effects similar to Valium but is nearly ten times more potent. Withdrawal symptoms include headache, muscle pain, confusion, hallucinations and convulsions. Some women have had seizures occur up to a week after cessation of use.

Rohypnol can often be dissolved in a beverage, and is easily undetectable.

Ecstasy Also known as MDMA and is known on the street as Adam, XTC, E, M, Bean, and Roll. Ecstasy comes in a tablet that is often branded; a few samples are shown below:

In combination with alcohol, it can induce a blackout with memory loss and a decrease in resistance. Women as young as 13 throughout the country have reported being raped after being involuntarily sedated with Rohypnol. Roughly ten minutes after having the drug in her system, women report feeling dizzy and disoriented, at the same time feeling too hot or too cold or both, some become nauseated. Sedation starts appox. 25-30 minutes crest within two hours, with effects continue for up to eight hours. The drug has no taste or odor. Victims don't have any memories of what happened while under the drug's influence. The woman can appear extremely intoxicated, with slurred speech or experience difficulty speaking, gastrointestinal disturbances and urinary retention, poor coordination, swaying, blood-shot eyes, decreased blood pressure, and then she passes out....but without the odor of alcohol.

Vicky was 19 when she came up pregnant - she had no physical signals of rape, she woke up in her own bed and therefore had no reason to be concerned. She assumes that she had too much to drink although she doesn't remember the previous night's events; she thought a friend must have helped get her safely home. She was shocked to discover 2 months later that she was pregnant. I hadn't had sex for over a year, and bought three pregnancy tests before going to a clinic for a blood test. She chose to keep and raise her child with the help of her family. In here words "having the baby bought peace and healing to my life"

Alcohol and Rohypnol combination is intensified and very hazardous together. If a woman is drinking alcohol when the drug is slipped in her drink, the combination of, their effects on her memory and judgment are greatly impaired. A woman who become intoxicated on a combination of alcohol and Rohypnol often experience "blackouts" lasting eight to twenty-four hours following ingestion making her unable to resist a sexual attack. If combined with other drugs the results may lead to respiratory depression, aspiration, coma and even death. Possession of Rohypnol is punishable for up to three years in prison and a fine. Distribution and administration of this rape drug without the person's knowledge is punishable by twenty years in prison and a fine.

Besides the worries of unprotected sex, sexually transmitted diseases she .

Your best defense against rapists and rape drugs is awareness.

Here are a few helpful tips for staying aware, alert and safe:

" Be careful about accepting drinks from anyone you don't know well or long enough to trust. The best choice not to let anyone fix you a drink, Offer to mix the drink yourself. Carry the drink yourself.

" Don't share or exchange drinks with anyone.

" If you are accepting a drink, make sure it's from an unopened container and that you open it yourself.

" Never accept drinks from individuals you do not know and trust

" Do not drink from open containers at parties and accept drinks only from bartenders or servers, watch them open the can or pour- don't be distracted by conversation.

" If dancing, don't leave your drinks unattended. If you realize your drink has been left unattended, toss it out.

" Consider buying a specially designed drug testing coaster- see below to test your drink for the drug. They are low-cost and a smart choice

" Remember any kind of beverage can be drugged- there is no taste or smell.

" If possible bring your own drinks to parties when possible, Don't drink from a container that is being passed around

" If your drink tastes or looks differently than it should or tastes "funny" or salty, foamy, cloudy, or if it has residue in it throw it away

" Don't go to parties alone; travel in a group of people and stick together at a party. Look out not only for yourself, but keep an eye on your female friends.

" A really good idea is to not let your friends get too drunk or wasted. If they do party intensely, take them home, staying with them to make sure they are all right before leaving.

" Don't let your friend disappear and don't let them wander off with a member of the opposite sex, stay by their side. Don't leave with someone you do not know well or have just met.

" Don't put your drink down and leave it unattended, even to go to the restroom. Monitor your drink constantly.

" Refuse to drink from a punchbowl; this is a place where anything can be dropped in.

" Stay sober. Don't use drugs or alcohol; you need to have a clear head at all times.

" Assign a designated sober person when going out.

" Notify other female friends you know about the effects of this dangerous drug.

" Be observant to the behaviors and actions of your friends, trust your instincts.

" Listen for the street names of the drugs mentioned above.

" Keep a cell phone with you and charged up in the event you have a problem and need help.

Remember You Did Not Deserve What Happened To You

And the Assault Was Not Your Fault.

" If you think that you have been a victim, notify the authorities immediately if you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, you can file a police report.

" Get immediate medical attention. Call 911 or go to an emergency room. Request that a urine sample be taken to screen for the presence of date rape drugs.

" Preserve as much physical evidence as possible. Don't urinate, shower, bathe, douche, or throw away the clothing you were wearing during the assault. If possible, save any other materials that might provide evidence, such as the glass or can that held your drink.

" Call a crisis rape center for information and support.

All women are potential victims of sexual assault: regardless of there age, race, sexual preference, occupation or education. A woman can be assaulted by a stranger, by a friend, by an acquaintance, co-worker or relative.

Q. How will I feel after an assault?

There is no "correct" way to feel after an assault. Be aware that different people need to heal in their own ways. Some women may need to talk about the assault a number of times to heal; in working through a difficult experience- reliving the violation. Seeking a professional familiar with date rape can make a big difference in recovery.

Some women find their faith in God may be strained but find strength in keeping their faith and attending church or synagogue helpful. Other women find the answer may be involvement in activities to help forget. Then when they are better able to handle the facts and face them can they find peace to work through the pain.

Finding a qualified rape counselor or participating in a closed group counseling with other women, who understand what you are going through can be healing in itself. Many women who have been victims of the date rape drug have some or all of the following reactions:

" Anger and frustration

" Disbelief and Denial

" Guilt/ Self Blame

" Helplessness/ Confused

" Avoidance of Friends

" Feeling Paranoid

" Difficulty in Concentrating

" Change in Sleep Patterns

" Sexual Disinterest Or Change in Sexual Behavior

" Can't Stop Crying Or Can't Cry

" Inability To Cope With Ordinary Situations

" Problems With Trust

" Depression

" Frenzied involved in their Work

" Low Self-Esteem

" Reoccurring Nightmares

" Changed Alcohol Or Drug use

" Wanting To Forget, Escape OR never get out Of Bed

" Eating Everything Or Nothing At All

As you work through the healing process, keep these suggestions in mind:

" It is not your fault - you are not responsible for the unwanted sex.

" You are not the guilty party.

" Some people may try to make you feel responsible for what happened because of their own feelings of vulnerability or guilt.

" That you may have been intoxicated does not give anyone the right to assault you - nothing gives anyone that right.

" Acquaintance rape happens because the rapist fails to respect the victim's individual will, not because of irresistible arousal.

" A rapist acts without regard for the victim, so saying no or even physically resisting cannot always be enough to prevent the assault.

How to Help a Friend Who Has Been Assaulted.

" Let her make decisions. Offer to make phone calls for information, but don't take over for her. She has just had control taken away and needs to regain it.

" Don't touch her without first asking permission. Say, for example, "Would you like a hug?" or "Would you like to hold my hand?" A caring touch can help the victim but unwanted touching can be very uncomfortable or even threatening.

" Don't blame her. Questions like "Why did you go home with him?" What were you thinking of? Will only reinforce her sense of guilt or shame.

" Let her know she is safe, and that you won't violate her trust.

" Try to deal with your own reactions to the circumstances later. You may feel angry, helpless, confused, or violated yourself. Keep in mind that your friend probably feels all that and more, so seeing your reactions may not help her. Try to focus on her feelings. Later, when her immediate necessities are taken care, is the best time for you to take care of yourself and seek out a counselor. A sexual assault can be distressing for friends, land family members, as well.

Drug testing drink coaster Singles bars have never been risk free, but so-called date-rape drugs give you one more reason to be cautious. After a friend was attacked by a man who may have spiked her drink, Francisco Guerra developed a cardboard drink coaster that can identify two of the most popular date-rape drugs: gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and ketamine. Just place a drop of liquid on the coaster, and rub it in with your finger. If the spot turns blue, toss that cocktail. Fifteen million of these coasters have already been distributed; look for them at 7-Elevens
